Description
The point of this project was to create a book in spreads that was entirely of our own creation, which included the body copy, illustrations/graphics, and layout. We were given one of three prompts for it, and the one that interested me the most was the "Chance Project". The description for it was:
Take the theme of “chance” and consider what the concept means. Think about “chance” as it is contrasted with other terms such as “destiny” or “choices”. Ask yourself what things in life come by chance, or do you believe that everything that takes place is “destined”? Or perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle. What role do choices play?
My take on it was to examine fate and how it shapes our lives through our relationships, that the bonds that we create with one another are ultimately sculpt the way our lives play out. This was done through thread, quilting, and sewing metaphors. With the idea and body copy sorted out, I went to a local antique store and bought just over 100 photos, 7 antique bobbins of thread, and some thimbles. I took photographs and scanned all of the photos to preserve the originals, and sewed together, embroidered, or crocheted the prints before scanning them again to place within my layouts. The final digital product was to have at least 6 spreads with a minimum of 750 words, and a physical book that was bound in a way that made the most sense for the project. Mine was hand bound using a saddle stitch.
